Las relaciones entre Australia y España

The former President of the Australian Senate, Hon Paul Calvert, led a six-member Parliamentary delegation to Spain from 18-24 April. The delegation made a series of high level calls in Madrid, Cordoba, and Seville, which included the Presidents of the Senate and the Congress of Deputies, the Secretaries of State for Immigration and Foreign Affairs, the President of the Junta of Andalucía, and H.M. King Juan Carlos. Their discussions ranged from measures to enhance bilateral trade and investment to the challenge of international terrorism, from dealing with illegal immigration to climate change. They also had a chance to savour the sights and tastes of Andalucía including the cellars of a sixteenth century palace in Cordoba!

Spain shoots Breaker Morant

The Embassy in Madrid arranged for Bruce Beresford, director of films such as Don's Party, Black Robe and Driving Miss Daisy, to fly to Spain to attend a retrospective of his films at the Filmoteca de Catalunya in Barcelona. We participated in press conferences and roundtables to discuss Mr Beresford's films. The screening of his best-known work Breaker Morant prompted an interesting debate about whether the ethical dilemmas of "rule 303" (following unjust orders in times of war) has significance in the battlefields of today. The retrospective lasted almost a month and the films were very well received (although to Mr Beresford's amusement we overhead two elderly Catalan women remark after watching the quite graphic Don's Party "What savages!")

Fire up for Adelaide

Ambassador Noel Campbell farewelled the Madrid contingent to Spain's team of participants in the World Police and Fire Games held in Adelaide from 16 to 25 March. The full team drew participants from all parts of Spain and was expected to number around four hundred in total. The games are held every two years and include, in addition to regular sporting codes, specialised events relevant to duties of police and fire personnel such as "ultimate firefighter" and "horse and cart bucket brigade".

Monks, the end of the world, and a hint of eucalyptus  

The Embassy participated in a series of events to strengthen ties between Australia and Galicia, in the north-west of Spain. The Third Secretary and the Lord Mayor of A Coruña unveiled a plaque to commemorate the 16th anniversary of the founding of the New Norcia mission in Western Australia by the Galician Benedictine monk, Father Rosendo Salvado. The bronze plaque is mounted between two impressive eucalyptus trees grown from seeds sent from Australia to Spain by Father Salvado in the late 19th century, and is written in English, Spanish and Gallego. We also inaugurated a conference titled "From the End of the World to Terra Australis". Third Secretary spoke about the strength of the Australia-Galician relationship, noting Australia's strong defence industry interests in Galicia, the important influx of Galician immigration to Australia in the 1950s and recent Australian film festivals in Galicia. We also spoke at dinner of the Galician chapter of the Australia Spain Business Association. All events were very well attended and received a great deal of coverage in the local press.
